176. Sóng thần

Sóng Thần

Ngày xưa, vùng nước sâu rộng mênh mông, chỗ gặp gỡ giữa ba con sông đổ ra biển, nơi giáp giới nước ngọt của sông và nước mặn của đại dương, về phía đông bắc tỉnh Thuận Hóa tức là Thừa Thiên bây giờ, mà người ta gọi là phá Tam Giang, có ba ngọn sóng Thần, tục gọi là sóng Ông, sóng Bà và sóng Con. Ghe thuyền qua lại trên phá thường bị gia đình sóng thần nổi lên lật chìm, thiệt người hại của không biết bao nhiêu mà kể, khiến cho dân gian khiếp sợ mà truyền thành câu hát:
Thương anh em cũng muốn vô,
Sợ truông nhà Hồ, sợ phá Tam Giang.
Sóng thần ở phá Tam Giang chẳng những làm hại ghe đò cùng giới thuyền chài mà lắm lúc còn ào ào kéo lên đất liền lôi cuốn nhà cửa, súc vật, người ta, phá phách mùa màng của dân chúng quanh vùng. Nhất là mỗi lần sóng Ông đi hoành hành, nổi cơn thịnh nộ bất thình lình, đi qua đâu là lôi cuốn đắm chìm tất cả mọi vật dưới sức mạnh khủng khiếp của thần. Người ta cho rằng sóng thần thèm khát thịt người nên chẳng có năm nào là không có bao nhiêu mạng bỏ mình vào miệng sóng. Người ta sợ hãi sóng thần, hàng năm bày lễ cúng trọng thể, hy vọng thần bớt cơn giận dữ cho dân chúng làm ăn, đi lại trên phá Tam Giang. Mỗi lần tế sóng thần, các phường thuyền họp nhau lại cúng heo, gà, có khi giết trâu, bò thả xuống phá cho thần ăn. Đồng thời các thuyền giấy trang hoàng lộng lẫy chở những người nộm, cùng voi ngựa giấy, vàng mã, đủ mọi thứ được thả trôi ra phá dâng cho thần.

Sóng thần không từ chối những lễ vật của người cúng, song vẫn chứng nào tật ấy, thỉnh thoảng lại nổi lên giết người, lấy của, dùng phá Tam Giang làm nơi sào huyệt.

Tai họa khủng khiếp của hung thần gây nen thấu đến tai vua. Bấy giờ vua Tự Đức đang trị vì, muốn trừ hại cho dân, bèn ngự giá thân chinh đến tận nơi. Vua sai đặt súng thần công ở trên một khuỷu sông nhắm về phía sóng thần thường nổi lên. Biết hung thần có phép tà khó trị, nhà vua đã cho đúc sẵn đạn vàng để nạp vào họng thần công. Đâu đó chỉnh tề rồi, vua mới ra lệnh tuyên đọc lời tuyên cáo ngỏ cùng thần sóng: "Trẫm vâng mệnh trời làm vua nước Nam, thấy ngươi cũng thuộc hàng thủy thần ở trong lãnh thổ của trẫm mà lại làm điều bạo ngược, thường vô cớ làm hại đến dân của trẫm, nghịch với đạo trời, bất tuân phép nước. Vậy trẫm ra lệnh cho nhà ngươi từ đây phải dẹp thói hung hăng, dứt điều tàn bạo, xa hẳn chốn này. Trẫm kỳ hạn cho ngươi một ngày để suy nghĩ, nếu biết phải quấy mà hối cải thì trẫm cũng rộng lòng mà tha cho các tội đã qua, bằng không, bấy giờ đừng có trách trẫm sao không ra ân trước".

Sóng thần không đáp, nhưng mặt phá Tam Giang sôi sục, nước bỗng xanh đen cuồn cuộn phản chiếu sự tức giận của thần sóng đang tìm cách chống trả. Suốt ngày hôm ấy không thấy gì, nhà vua đoán chừng hung thần không dám lộ mặt giữa ban ngày dưới mặt trời, đợi đêm tối mới giở trò quỷ quái. Quả nhiên mặt trời vừa lặn khuất ở chân trời, gió đêm từ biển thổi mạnh vào thì phá Tam Giang bắt đầu lao xao nổi sóng. Mảnh trăng thượng tuần bị mây đen kéo che khuất. Gió bỗng từ mặt phá ùn ùn nổi lên, rồi trong bóng tối tiếng sóng ầm ầm sôi réo tiến rất nhanh về phía nhà vua. Ánh trăng lọt qua mây chiếu sáng xuống, nhà vua thấy một ngọn sóng lớn như hòn núi cao dẫn theo đầu hai ngọn sóng đen gnòm to lớn khác đâm xô về phía mình, ào ào hung hãn. Sóng thần tràn đến chỉ chực đổ ập lên chỗ vua, quan đóng thì một tiếng nổ long trời, thần công khạc lửa bắn đạn vàng nhắm trúng ngay đầu ngọn sóng. Cả ngọn núi nước đang sôi bỗng tan sập suống, hai phát thần công nổ tiếp, hai ngọn theo sau hoảng sợ bỏ chạy mất.

Luôn ba ngày sau sóng nước phá Tam Giang đỏ thắm màu máu. Người ta không tìm ra dấu vết gì, song từ đó, ghe thuyền qua lại trên phá không còn bị sóng thần nổi lên đánh chìm nữa.
