209. sự tích con cào cào

Cào cào xưa kia là một cô gái đẹp. Tính cô thích ăn diện nhưng vì nhà nghèo nên cô chưa được thỏa ý muốn. 

Một hôm, nhà vua bị lạc mất cô công chúa bèn sai quân lính đi tìm. Lúc đó cô gái đẹp đang kiếm củi dưới gốc cây sấu lớn bên đường. Tốp lính thứ nhất đi qua, hỏi rằng:

- Cô có thấy công chúa qua đây không?

Cô gái nhìn thấy toán người này có nhiều quần áo đẹp, cái nào cũng bay trong gió như tấm lụa màu hồng. Cô thích quá liền bảo:

- Cho tôi một chiếc, tôi đang rét lắm!

Tốp lính cho cô một chiếc áo rồi đi theo hướng cô đã chỉ.

Một lúc sau có tốp lính khác chạy qua, mặc toàn áo xanh màu lá. Trông thấy cô gái, họ dừng lại hỏi:

- Cô ơi có thấy công chúa chạy qua đây không?

Cô gái nghĩ: "Tốp trước đã cho ta áo hồng, tốp này có áo xanh.Ta xin một cái mặc cho đẹp". Nghĩ vậy, cô bảo họ:

- Tôi đang rét lắm, các ông cho tôi một cái áo thì tôi sẽ chỉ cho.

Tốp lính bảo nhau cho cô gái cái áo rồi họ tiếp tục đi theo đường cô chỉ.
Ðược hai cái áo, cô thích quá, thầm chắc rằng về nhà ai cũng phải khen.

Khi cô chuẩn bị về toán lính nữa mặc toàn áo màu trắng như nước suối. Họ thấy cô gái lại hỏi về công chúa. Quen như hai lần trước, cô đòi một cái áo rồi mới chỉ đường. Thế là cô có ba cái áo: một hồng, một trắng, một xanh. Cái nào cũng đẹp.

Cô khoác cả ba cái vào, ngắm nghía, nhảy nhót tung tăng. Bỗng trên trời có tiếng sét nổ dữ dội, làm một cành sấu rơi xuống đầu cô gái. Cô bị bẹp đầu rồi chết, hóa thành con Cào cào, suốt ngày tung tăng bay nhảy với bộ áo ba màu.
