140. Hoà thượng Trúc Thiền Họa Tượng Đức Quan Âm Bồ Tát





Năm Đồng Trị đời nhà Thanh, có một vị cao tăng ở Phổ Đà Sơn, pháp danh là Trúc Thiền. Hoà thượng Trúc Thiền từ bé đã thích vẽ, học vẽ tới mức nét vẽ tinh vi tuyệt diệu.

Có một năm nọ, Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền bị đương gia hòa thượng phái lên kinh thành thỉnh Kinh Phật về. Tới kinh thành, vừa đúng lúc trống điểm canh năm, trong cung chuông Cảnh Dương, trống Long Phụng cũng vừa gióng lên, Hoàng thượng lâm triều. Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền bèn theo bá quan văn võ đi vào cung triều kiến. Hoàng đế biết được đạo tràng Phổ Đà Sơn gởi Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền đến thỉnh kinh, vô cùng hoan hỉ, truyền chỉ mở yến tiệc ở khắp các điện làm lễ "tiếp phong" (lễ mời khách từ xa tới ăn cơm). Giữa buổi tiệc, có một vị tiểu thái giám đem tới một cuộn giấy lụa trắng dâng lên Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền, bảo rằng Lão Phật gia (tức Từ Hi Thái Hậu) từ lâu ngưỡng mộ danh tiếng của Phổ Đà Sơn, đặc biệt tuyên chỉ muốn Hòa thượng phải vẽ cho bà một bức hình ngài Quan Âm cao một trượng hai.

Hòa thượng về đến Phổ Đà Sơn, không dám trễ nãi, lập tức mài mực sửa soạn vẽ tranh. Khi ngài trải cuộn giấy trắng ra đo thì ngạc nhiên đứng sững, tại sao vậy? Vì cuộn giấy lụa bề dài tổng cộng chỉ có một trượng, làm cách nào để vẽ một bức hình ngài Quan Âm một trượng hai đây? Cuộn giấy lụa này lại chính tự tay Lão Phật gia ban tặng, làm sao tùy tiện đem đi đổi? Tuy nói rằng kỹ thuật của Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền rất cao siêu, và ngài là người cực kỳ thông minh trí tuệ nhưng đến lúc này cũng phải bó tay!

Hòa thượng bèn định tâm lại, tĩnh tọa trên bồ đoàn nhắm mắt khấn nguyện rằng:

- Xin Bồ Tát Cứu khổ cứu nạn, giả như đệ tử không vẽ được bảo tượng thì khó mà phụng chỉ vua ban, làm sao tránh khỏi tổn hoại thanh danh của Phổ Đà Sơn, đạo tràng của Bồ Tát đây? Xin Bồ Tát cho đệ tử linh cảm để vẽ được một bức tranh cao một trượng hai trên một tấm giấy chỉ dài có một trượng!

Ngài cứ khấn nguyện như thế mãi, từ từ thấm mệt. Đột nhiên, bảo tướng trang nghiêm của Đức Quan Âm Bồ Tát hiện ra trước mắt ngài, thoắt nhiên biến thành hình dáng của một cô gái bán cá chầm chậm bước tới, tay cầm giỏ tre, trong giỏ có một con cá đang nhảy tưng tưng. Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền đón chào nói:

- Cô thí chủ à, cô bán cho tôi con cá này đi!

Cô gái bán cá đáp:

- Ông là thầy tu, mua cá làm gì?

- Mua cá phóng sinh.

- Nếu như mua cá phóng sinh thì tôi xin tặng ông con cá này.

Cô gái vừa nói vừa khom lưng xuống để lấy con cá từ trong giỏ ra. Ngay giây phút ấy, cô gái bán cá giữ nguyên vị thế không động đậy nữa. Hòa thượng bắt đầu cảm thấy bối rối, tại sao lại nói cho tôi con cá rồi lại cứ đứng khom lưng không động đậy nữa? Ngài vừa nhìn vừa suy nghĩ, bỗng nhiên tâm trí như khai mở, giật mình thức giấc, trước mắt không còn thấy cô gái bán cá nào hết.

- Tuyệt diệu! Tuyệt diệu!

Hòa thượng tán thán không ngừng. Vừa rồi chính là Bồ Tát ứng mộng, dạy rằng chỉ cần vẽ hình ngài Quan Âm dưới hình dáng một cô gái bán cá đang đứng khom lưng cầm giỏ, thì cuộn giấy một trượng dư sức họa hình ngài Quan Âm cao một trượng hai.

Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền lập tức thắp một ngọn nến lớn, trải dài cuộn giấy, vung bút thoăn thoắt vẽ. Ngày hôm sau, một bức hình ngài Quan Âm rất khác thường được trình lên Lão Phật gia. Bức hình vẽ ngài Quan Âm, đầu phủ khăn tơ trắng, eo thắc dây vải, cúi đầu khom lưng chăm chú nhìn một con cá chép trong giỏ, dáng vẻ giản dị thanh tao, linh động như người sống.

Từ Hi Thái hậu nhìn bức hình không ngớt tán thán, tự tay cầm bút đề lên bốn chữ "Ngư Lam Quan Âm" (Quan Âm cầm giỏ cá), truyền chỉ sao lại bức hình ấy để ban hành trong dân gian, cho các chùa viện và bách tính có thể đem về thờ phụng, lại còn ban thưởng cho Hòa thượng Trúc Thiền một bộ Cà Sa đỏ thắm, và cho ngài đặc ân vào cung không phải hành đại lễ nữa.
