The tale of broom

Once upon a time, a woman who worked as a chef in kitchen in the heaven was a great chef. She could made delicious cakes which made everyone who had tasted them would never forget their taste. The king of heaven let her manage the kitchen but she was greedy and often tasted dishes before the king though that was forbidden thing. She always tried to steal food in warehouse of heaven.

She fell in love with a herdsman in heaven. Herding in heaven was also miserable as in the ground so he very liked alcohol and delicious dishes after he fell in love with the woman.
About the woman, she loved him more than every thing existing. Whenever the man wanted to eat she always had no demur to take a little from king’s dishes to give him. That thing had happened few times. Something, she also led him to go in wine vault and let him drank delightfully. But that thing had never been detected.

One day, the king had a party that made she had to work hard. All dishes had to have finished before nightfall. At last, all things were ready. While she was putting dishes on tables she heard the herdsman sang. Immediately, she knew the man found her. She took a little from party dishes then gave him. She also gave him few cup of wine then she came back to cook desserts, marzipan. But after he bathed horses he thought about sweet dishes and delicious wine were in the kitchen he felt hungry. Therefore, he sneaked in the kitchen. In the dark, he grabbed a bottle of wine and gulped. That wine was so great but it made him dizzy he needed something to eat and he went toward dished was placed nearby which were radiating sweet aroma. He took them by his hands and ate until his stomach was full of food.
When soldiers took dishes came up the party all dishes was tasted that made the king was so angry. He shouted loudly that made every one be scared. The party became an unhappy party.
The woman bowed his head and admitted her fault. She and the herdsman were transformed into brooms which every day had to sweep filth in kitchen in the ground all their lives. That was worst punishment.
Long time later, they lamented that they had to work hard without rest. The king of heaven felt pity them then he let them rest three days which is three days beginning of year. Therefore, all people in Vietnam don’t use brooms in three days beginning of year (Tet holidays).

Vietnamese  fairy tales includes many stories as Tam and Cam; So Dua; Hundred – knot- bamboo tree... which were spread in folk. Each stories has  its own meaning. I think I can not translate exactly each word into english but I will try my best to convey its meaning to you. Hope you like them!

Once upon a time, there in a village had a couple who worked as servants for a landlord. Although they were over fifty years old, they had ever not had a child. Tam and Cam

Once upon a time, there had a little girl named Tam. Her mother died early so her father decided to remarry on purpose the stepmother would take care of his little daughter. The stepmother gave birth to a girl, named Cam after that. Then, her father died after few years. Tam had to live with her stepmother and her sister, Cam. Since the time, she was forced to work hard, all housework, while Cam had to do nothing. One day, the stepmother gave Tam and Cam each one a corf to caught fish. Fairy Lieu Hanh

Ngoc  Hoang, the king of gods in heaven, had a daughter, named Lieu Hanh. Lieu Hanh was fairy who was headstrong and usually didn’t obey rules in heaven. Ngoc Hoang had advised her many times but he still did what she wanted. Therefore, Ngoc Hoang decided to punish his daughter to teach her a lesson. One time, Lieu Hanh made a mistake, his father forced her to get down and lived on ground three years. Lieu Hanh transformed into a beautiful girl and built a hut, sold tea under Ngang pass after she landed on ground. The place was wild trees that grew up luxuriantly but the road leading from north to south crossed there so many travelers crossed there everyday. Besides, there had only a tea shop because others feared robbers and beasts around the place. Consequently, her tea shop was always crowded.
